and just to say

The saffron crocus (crocus sativus) bulbs finally arrived from Lambley Nursery and I am going to have my own  (small) field of saffron next year.

I'm thinking of Crete, of Iran, of Paella.

Oh they will be lovely - will you be able to collect a little bit for cooking?

I've had some plants from Lambley via mail-order but I haven't actually been to the nursery yet?
Have you been there?

Yes, Lambley's worth a visit, much better than its website makes it look.
I really hope to be able to get some usable saffron. Apparently Iranians have a saffron drink only made with fresh spice which I'd love to try. It is a really fascinating spice.
